Ryan Bushong
Hi all, I took this picture today near Rifle, Colorado. In the field it appeared very small (smaller than I have ever seen a Red-Tailed). Could Broad-winged or even something else be a possibility? https://ebird.org/checklist/S66324939 Photos on the list Edited March 28, 2020 by Ryan Bushong

Ryan Bushong
It appeared way too small to be a Rough-legged. Why not Broad-winged?
Bird-Boys
First of all, I just want to add that this is a Dark Morph. 5 minutes ago, Ryan Bushong said: It appeared way too small to be a Rough-legged. The Bird Nuts
Pretty sure it's not a Rough-legged Hawk - they have a wide dark terminal tail band. I don't have much experience with other dark morph hawks, but I'm guessing Red-tailed based on the tail pattern.
Bird-Boys
Additionally, I think the hawk is higher up than the crow, making the hawk look smaller.

floraphile
I'm just learning my hawks, but wouldn't the carpal patches and extremely pale primaries go more with Rough-Legged Hawk? What makes it more likely to be a Red-Tailed?
Melierax
The "crow" looks like a raptor to me. In the first photo if you zoom up on it, the top of the tail looks red with minimal barring (so Red-tailed Hawk). I bet that the second photo is actually of the dark bird in the first photo. In any case, the second photo is also a Red-tailed Hawk... makes me think Harlan's due to the seeming lack of red in the tail and the "spiked" appearance of the tail feathers.

Oops, didnt clarify before posting again... when you zoom up on the RIGHT bird you can see a red tail, which is why the second photo could be of the LEFT bird. Ryan Bushong
Yes, I can. Sorry for all the trouble. The bird on the bottom left is an American Crow just at a weird angle. It had been calling and flying over the river prior to the hawk's arrival. Edited March 29, 2020 by Ryan Bushong
Melierax
Wow that's a lot better. Now that I can see it better, yeah, that does look more like a crow. I think it must be a camera angle because the bird on the right is most certainly a Red-tailed Hawk. And if that is definitely the same bird in the close up photo, I don't think it's a Harlan's.
