floraphile
Hi, All-- In this time of home confinement and the luxury of birdwatching-at-will that it allows, I want to build my birding library. What Go-To and/or Must Have volumes should I aquire? In addition to the Peterson, Sibley (East & West), and National Geographic field guides for North America, I already have: Karlson & Dunne, Gulls Simplified; Dunne et al, Hawks in Flight; Wheeler & Clark, A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors; and O'Brien, The Shorebird Guide Thanks! Charlie Spencer
The Warbler Guide. https://www.amazon.com/Warbler-Guide-Tom-Stephenson/dp/0691154821/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3STCD019WRUNO&keywords=warbler+guide&qid=1585580293&sprefix=warbler+%2Caps%2C-1&sr=8-1 I really enjoyed "The Art of Finding Birds". I like Dunne's style. https://www.amazon.com/Art-Bird-Finding-Before-Them-ebook/dp/B005H0KD8M/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_2?keywords=how+to+find+birds+dunne&qid=1585580341&sr=8-2-fkmr3 I'd skip Audobon's Encyclopedia. It's too cumbersome, and most of the information is now available on line. https://www.amazon.com/Audubon-Society-Encyclopedia-North-American/dp/0517032880/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=encyclopedia+birds&qid=1585580497&sr=8-6 Edited March 30, 2020 by Charlie Spencer
floraphile
Thanks, Charlie. ? I had ordered Stephenson's book earlier this week--based on Amazon ratings--and was hoping it would also be a recommendation from others in the WhatBird group. I will order Dunne's book on finding birds.

I am a bird parent but overy new to birding as an active engagement. These really help me find new readings to prepare. I have been on and off reading The Birder's Handbook- which a friend had suggested to be good for a novice like me. Maybe some of you might find it useful too.
Charlie Spencer
@Lisa Coy, what's a 'bird parent'? Does that mean you have parakeets or other species traditionally kept as pets / companions? Thanks.

Right now, i am sort of the foster parent to birds who perch on my balcony. I leave them treats and water there and have also made a comfy space for them. So perhaps parent might be more sentimental than reality

floraphile
@Charlie Spencer Yesterday, I received my copy of Dunne's The Art of Bird Finding, and finished it in one sitting. Lol. Very entertaining and informative book. Ornithologists are people, too. ❤️

Geez, I wish this topic wasn't buried in this sub-forum, but was somewhere it would get some more input. All of which is just a long way to say ... Bump.
