floraphile
While walking my dog this afternoon, I noted several raptors. A Black Vulture and several hawks--both seen & heard. I recognized a Red Tailed call but there was at least one other species (maybe 2) calling. I then saw 2 Buteos soaring in tandem and thought them to be Red-Taileds. They had a brightness to the undersides just above the tail, but I still felt they were probaby red tails, but looked for crescents to rule out/in Red-Shouldered, but could not discern any. Then I heard these calls. Also, what I thought was a hawk called from a nearby tree, as if in response to those in the air, then out popped a Blue Jay. I knew they would mimic certain hawks, but didn't know they would try to have a conversation with them! Attached is a video clip of one of the hawks calling--the audio is likely more helpful than the pics, as I only had my phone on me, and they are quite distant. 20200401_115835 - Copy.mp4 Edited April 1, 2020 by floraphile typo
floraphile
another video that shows the birds better--although still distant--along with Mr. Blue Jay's usual call. Pup was pulling at my arm, so I apologize for the shakiness. 20200401_115553 - Copy_Trim.mp4 Edited April 1, 2020 by floraphile more info

Sneat
I am hearing at least one Red-shouldered Hawk in the first video. They are probably both Red-shouldered Hawks but it is hard to tell in the video if the birds are alternating calling, or if it is just one Hawk calling for the entire video. I hear the Blue Jay in the second video as well. Wait for more people to respond though. Bird call ID is not my strong suit.
Sneat
Also, did you post a location for these videos?

Sneat
Thanks! It can be easy to forget. In this case the location doesn't really seem to change much in terms of the ID.
insanityslave
my 2cents: first one sound like a red tailed second one i only hear a blue jay (and a cardinal), no hawk at all 3rd sounds a lot like a red shouldered to me.

cvanbosk
Just a note. There is a bluejay in my neighborhood that does a PERFECT red-shouldered hawk imitation. When I finally caught a visual of him doing it, it has made me question my audible r-s hawk ids since.

I'm trying to decide whether I should completely stop marking RSHA based on call alone. It's one of the few calls I can halfway ID, so dropping it from my meager vocabulary is going to hurt. Maybe just start reporting them as a Red-tailed Hawk/Blue Jay and see if the reviewer permanently bans you from e-bird for being unable to tell the difference between an elephant and a mouse ?

I heard a definite Red Tailed at the time. The sound is much better when played back on my phone. Not sure how to improve it on here or my laptop. I just wanted confirmation/rejection of Red Shouldered Hawk. In addition to the Blue Jay's mimcry, there were actual hawks vocalizing.
