Mysterious red bird at my feeder

Recommended Posts

A red bird with a green head has appeared twice at my feeder in suburban Detroit.  It is larger than a cardinal with round head a rounder belly than a cardinal.  It had no crest. A bird-watching friend saw it too and had never seen one before.  It was eating black sunflower seeds.

Sometimes cardinals can lose all their head feathers due to mites or molting.  It would then have no crest and a dark head.  Just an idea and they do like sunflower seeds.

That's a good guess.  Boy, do they look strange!  http://magazine.outdoornebraska.gov/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/cardinal-by-zechmann.jpg
