sbruenjes
I saw this bird today, walking along local streets in Northern New Jersey. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The Bird Nuts
It's a chickadee. Are Black-capped more likely than Carolinas there? Edited April 5, 2020 by The Bird Nuts

Yeah, but this is in northern New Jersey, which seems to have more Black-cappeds. I'd guess that hybrids are pretty common there, too.
birdbrain22
Yes... in north NJ the default species is Black-capped and in central NJ is where the hybrid zone is and the switch over to Carolinas starts. I guess it would depend on one's definition of north NJ as well.
Jefferson Shank
I think this is a hybrid.
akandula
From a plumage standpoint, this appears to be a pure Black-capped. Note the bulky appearance, extensive white cheek patch, and strongly white-edged wing coverts and primaries that contrast greatly with the black tertials.

Jefferson Shank
Okay, why? It just doesn't look right for Black-capped.(to me) It doesn't look bulky enough.
Sneat
How bulky do you want it to be? It is still a Chickadee. I agree with Black-capped
Jefferson Shank
Yes, I can see Black-capped now... But at first glance, something didn't look right. Do you get the point now!?
birdbrain22
If it wasn’t clear from my last post... this is definitely a Black-capped.
