Hailey
Can anyone help identify this bird? It has been flying into our windows over the past several days. We have placed non-colorful items on the windowsill to keep it from harming itself, but it has been persistent. It has also been going from screen to screen to try to get into our porch. This is the best picture I could get this morning through the screen; this was taken in Delaware. Also, any advice on how to help the bird to stop flying into the glass other than what we are doing? Kerri
You can try taping a black silhouette of a raptor in the window. Sorry I can't identify the bird. A lot of birds see their reflection in the windows and try attacking during mating season i.e. a male sees another male and is trying to defend its territory.
The Bird Nuts
It looks like either a Song or a Fox Sparrow. I'm leaning Song. Do you have any other photos? Even poor photos might help a lot.

Charlie Spencer
Welcome to Whatbird! Maybe closing the curtains or window treatments will reduce the reflectivity? As @The Bird Nuts said, the bird is likely interpreting its reflection as a rival. Maybe a different background color will cut back on the mirroring. Hailey
Thank you! I don't have any others, but I'm sure he/she will be back tomorrow morning. Good idea - I can close the shutters in the window, but we can't on the screened porch. I'll try to capture a better pic tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback! blackburnian
My first impression was Fox, but wouldn’t be the least surprised if it was a Song.

Kerri
Every spring for the last 5 years we have had a pair of cardinals tapping at our office window at their reflections ?
Sneat
I think this looks best for a Song Sparrow. A Fox Sparrow in Delaware would show a significant amount of red, while I do not see any on this individual.

Eastern Song Sparrows are not nearly blackish, so, assuming that this is either a Fox or a Song, then the color rendition of the bird in the photos is way off. I think that nothing about the bird's color as presented in the photo is at all useful, though the pattern of dark and light with streaking on the sides and a fairly long tail do support the original supposition of Fox or Song. Sneat
Alright, thanks for correcting me. I can see what you're saying about the color!
RobinHood
FWIW The colours in the rest of the image don't seem too crazy so I tried a colour (white balance) correction and then up-scaled the resolution. Not much of a change. Just wondering if there any other possibilities other than sparrows or does the overall body profile rule this out? PS. When I play around with Whatbird images I put them in a dedicated folder and delete them immediately after the debate.
Kevin
Some years a male roadrunner comes up on the patio, and fights with the french doors, for a week or so. It is quite interesting to wach a roadrunner come charging at you!

blackburnian
No, it’s a sparrow for sure. Probably Song, but I can’t rule out Fox.
