Recommended Posts

Was birding at Hahamongna Watershed Park, in La Canada Flintridge, CA today and found some flycatchers.  My skills with flycatchers is not very good. Can anyone help.

Beautiful shots!

The second photo is a Gray Flycatcher with the overall pale coloration, rounded head, longer bill with pale on the base of the lower mandible, and shorter primaries giving it a long-tailed look. The 4th photo is also Gray Flycatcher, I believe

Not sure about three, but I agree with the rest.

Note how long the wings are on the pewee, with the important "measurement" being the length of wing tip beyond the tip of the longest tertial. This is true for all migrant species of pewee (flycatchers in the genus Contopus). Since Empidonax flycatchers don't have anywhere near this wing length, it is the best, first differentiator of the two genera -- outside the tropics.
