Unknown Raptor? Bad Cell Phone photos

Recommended Posts

Photos taken yesterday south of Houston Texas. I happened to notice this large raptor on the ground in the early afternoon. At first glace I thought it was a Bald Eagle but I'm sure now it is not. Merlin identified it as a Ferruginous Hawk - which I've never seen.  The only other large white headed raptor I commonly see is Crested Caracara but it doesn't look right for that either. Overall impression was very large hawk, sold dark wing, white breast and white head feathering. Thank you.

This is an Osprey. Note the brown above and white below, and overall they are whiter than most raptors. From below, the wings are mostly white with a prominent dark patch at the wrists. The head is white with a broad brown stripe through the eye.

Yes! This must be it. Osprey is a lifer for me too. Thank you!

I’ve never seen one perched on the ground like this.

Ospreys on the ground:

But if it's not an Osprey, what else fits?

Just wanted to say thank you to all who reviewed the photos and offered advice/suggestions. I am going to try to use some software tonight to see if I can pull out some more details in the photos (this will be my first time so we will see how that goes lol). Much appreciated.

Osprey with lots of white and a narrow mask.

Besides the head colors (which could be affected by wind), what is it some of y'all don't like for Osprey?

The last photo is the only one that appears to show a dark stripe through the eye, and it's also the blurriest photo. The others show white all the way behind the eye where even a faint eye stripe would show up. Also, theres a dark belly band, and white spots on the scapulars, and there's too much feathering on the legs.
