Mush
Today I saw this Sandpiper in Port Charlotte, Florida when looking for a white-rumped sandpiper. I am assuming it is a western sandpiper; however, I am just posting this here to be certain. Thanks (I am referring to the bird in focus in the picture, not the least sandpiper)
akandula
Western Sandpiper is correct. Note the drooping bill, rufous head/back, and black legs.
Tony Leukering
Why isn't it a White-rumped? It's wings are very long and it seems to have at least a couple of vague streaks on the flank. Additionally, the upperparts aren't a match for a high-plumage Western. Western's upper scapulars are more extensively reddish and those scaps usually contrast fairly strongly with darker and/or duller wing coverts.
AlexHenry
White-rumped Sandpiper - compared size and shape to Least - Western would be smaller and more compact/chunky
akandula
Thanks for the correction. I never saw a White-rumped that colorful. But the structure is spot on for White-rumped.
