Charlie Spencer
Pollen, maybe? Spores from those nearby fungi? Edited April 25, 2020 by Charlie Spencer

But who knows, there probably are some. Could it just be odd lighting?
BigOly
Looks like seeds packed by an Acorn Woodpecker.

Charlie Spencer
My point remains the bird rubbed up against something.
akandula
This is definitely lighting. I find that nuthatches are one of the hardest birds to photograph with good lighting.

I agree with lighting making the color. I've noticed that with photographing birds especially white ones.
The Bird Nuts
Yep, this happens when light is reflecting off of another object below, such as bright green grass or leaves. The color just shows up much more when the feathers are white.
The Bird Nuts
I don't know if I explained that correctly. haha But, anyway, I just took a photo of my dog and her white fur was yellow because there were daffodils all around her. Debbie
Thank you all, yes I agree with the lighting as well, this is only my second year photographing wildlife so I wanted to confirm I wasn’t missing anything. Appreciate you all very much. Stay safe ?
