Mindy Smith
Was going through some unknown photos and took this one when walking along a path above the ocean in central costal CA in February last year. The only bird that is close in size and color without wing bars that I know is a blue-gray gnatcatcher but the colors don't seem right. Suggestions appreciated. Jodi Nielson
School me please. It looks blue to me and the Common Yellowthroats around here are not blue. What identifiers lead you to that conclusion?
The Bird Nuts
You are seeing the white/light gray feathers that male Common Yellowthroats have around their black mask. Light gray and white look blue in low light. The back is greenish (again, it has a bluish hue because of the lighting), the belly is a paler greenish-gray, and the throat is yellow, all pointing to Common Yellowthroat. Jodi Nielson
Thanks @The Bird Nuts. I'm still not really seeing it but I bow to your expertise. Thanks again.
The Bird Nuts
I should have said I think that is what we are seeing. I'm not totally sure what's going on with the head either. Edited May 2, 2020 by The Bird Nuts
